Who's a mermaid? The meaning behind Starbucks' logo

This is a good question. This is also the question we keep asking ourselves during the logo evolution (yes, the author is involved in the logo project). We all need to know more realistically and deeply who she is.

There is a history behind this.

Let's go back to 1971, when Starbucks was just founded. In order to show the nautical history of coffee and the deep origin of Seattle as a seaport, a lot of research was done on ancient nautical books at that time. Suddenly, in a flash, the mermaid appeared: she was a double-tailed mermaid carved by Nordic wood in the 16th century. The mermaid has some roots-both a seductive legend and a sailing theme, which is exactly what the founder was looking for. So, a logo was designed around the mermaid, and we formed an inextricable bond with the mermaid.

Over the past forty years, we have made some changes to this logo. We will now revise it again to preserve our traditions while continuing to develop. But the mermaid was there all the time. She is the core of Starbucks.
