Scientists collect raw materials from a Portuguese coffee roasting company and dry them. Then, at 163 degrees Celsius, boil the powder in water for about 45 minutes, separate the liquid and add sugar. Next, add yeast to the liquid, let the juice ferment, and finally concentrate the sample to get a higher alcohol content. (similar processes are used to brew other distilled drinks, such as whisky from wheat and rum from molasses.)

Look at that! Coffee grounds make an alcoholic beverage with 40% ethanol, almost comparable to spirits such as vodka and tequila. The researchers will publish a study on the drink in the journal LWT-Food Science and Technology in September.

Eight professional taste evaluators assessed the smell and taste of the drink. The judges described the drink as: it smells like coffee, but it tastes a little bitter and tastes a little pungent. The researchers point out that with the improvement of technology in the future, the taste of the drink may be better. They concluded that the quality of the drink was good for human consumption.

But don't expect caffeine in your drink to be refreshing. Because most of the caffeine has been lost in the brewing process.
