Based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare from 2008 to 2011, the study investigated the relationship between coffee drinking and osteoporosis in 4066 postmenopausal women who had undergone bone mineral density tests.

The results showed that if postmenopausal women drank less than one cup of coffee a day, the risk of osteoporosis was reduced by 21%, one cup of coffee a day reduced the risk of osteoporosis by 33%, and two cups of coffee reduced the risk of osteoporosis by 36%. Accordingly, the team believes that postmenopausal women drinking a moderate amount of coffee can increase bone density.

Regarding the rumor that caffeine in coffee interferes with calcium absorption and causes osteoporosis, Korean experts said that our study sets the amount of one cup of coffee consumed by people as 200mL, and osteoporosis only occurs when the caffeine content exceeds 330mg, which requires 600mL coffee, that is, more than three cups of coffee can cause osteoporosis.
