European Specialty Coffee Association (SCAE) Barista Certification Standards

There are numerous "barista training institutions" around the world, but there is no independent testing and certification mechanism based on knowledge and production ability. Just like obtaining a driver's license, the European Specialty Coffee Association will allow you to obtain our certification regardless of where you received your training or even learned it yourself. You only need to pass our written, oral and practical tests to obtain our certification. Our tests are based on the most common international standards.

Because the role of the modern barista extends beyond espresso machines and grinders, our tests will include the use of other brewing tools and general coffee knowledge.

The three levels we divide are:

Grade 1 Standard, Junior Barista

A six-month working record is required, either in a coffee shop, coffee roasting business, or coffee sales business.

The test consists of three written tests, namely, basic coffee knowledge, including coffee cultivation, processing, grading, roasting and tasting;

Basic knowledge of coffee making, theory of coffee extraction, and basic knowledge of other common coffee making methods;

Basic knowledge of espresso, including coffee machines, grinders, machine operation, coffee making, and various coffee beverages;

There are also simple hands-on tests;

Level 2 Standard, Intermediate Barista

A year's work record is required and a higher level test is passed.

The written test content is the same as before, but the difficulty is increased.

The test was more difficult and there was an oral exam.

Grade III standard, senior barista

A two-year working record is required and a passing of the intermediate barista test is required.

Written, oral, and practical tests follow expert requirements and include coffee tasting.
