Mount Elgon Manor
Mount Elgon, the second highest mountain in Kenya, is formed by volcanic eruptions. Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano, is located on the border with Kenya and northeast of Lake Victoria. Coordinates: 1 °8 & # 39: NJ 34 °33 & # 39: an extinct volcano on the Kenya-Uganda boundary of Mount Elgonne. The crater is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) in diameter and has several peaks, of which Wagagai is the highest (4321 meters (14176 feet)). The hillside is gentle. The east and southeast are integrated with the Uasin Gishu plateau. Under the cliffs to the west and northwest are the plains of eastern Uganda 1100 meters (3600 feet) above sea level. There are traces of glaciers at the top of the mountain, and at the bottom of the mouth of the volcano are large swamps and the Suam and Turkwell rivers that flow out of the moors. There are heather trees and other plants in the high marsh area. Below 3050 m (10000 ft) above sea level is bamboo forest, and below 2550 m (8300 ft) is temperate deciduous forest. The Bantu-speaking Gisu grows coffee, bananas, millet and corn on the west slope. The climate is humid, mild and dry. The average annual rainfall exceeds 1270 mm. There are also tropical forest climate characteristics from Mount Elgon to Lake Victoria, with rainfall of up to 3500 mm on the southern slope of Mount Elgon.
