Last Updated: 2024/09/19, As one of the three major hometown of overseas Chinese in China, Hainan's coffee culture has a direct relationship with overseas Chinese. This is one of the birthplaces of coffee in China.

After hundreds of years of inheritance, coffee culture has become very common in Hainan. In every prefecture and city of Hainan, people have the habit of drinking coffee. Among them, Xinglong of Wanning and Fukuyama of Chengmai are the most famous. On the other hand, Boao in Qionghai deduces a different style of coffee culture by virtue of a variety of unique cafes and coffee bars.

Wanning Xinglong

Experience the coffee making process

As the most famous gathering place for returned overseas Chinese in Hainan, the prosperous coffee culture has a unique amorous feelings. In this town, there are more than 30 coffee shops, walking in the streets of the town, it seems that you can always smell the aroma of coffee. Although each cafe here has its own characteristics and loyal coffee customers, it is inseparable from the prosperous local coffee. Many of the coffee shops here are run by returned overseas Chinese, so you can also taste authentic Southeast Asian snacks in these coffee shops.

Prosperous coffee has been famous as early as the sixties of the last century. What the Xinglong people most like to talk about is the story of Premier Zhou Enlai and Xinglong Coffee. On February 7, 1960, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Xinglong Farm. After drinking Xinglong Coffee, he spoke highly of it: "Xinglong Coffee is first-class in the world. I have drunk a lot of foreign coffee, but our own coffee tastes good." The prime minister had three drinks in a row and was dissuaded by his wife Deng Yingchao when he planned to drink the fourth. A cup of coffee with strong flavor, an amiable prime minister, wrote a beautiful article for Xinglong Coffee. In those days, Xinglong Coffee has become the most decent gift that Hainan people can bring to visit relatives and friends on the island.

Now, in Xingxing, people can experience not only the taste of coffee, but also the production of coffee.

Sprinkle coffee beans into the grinding eye, a long strip of wood is pulled by manpower, two short cylindrical grinding plates of the same size start at the same time, and coffee powder continues to slide into the grinding chamber from the grinding eye. In Wanning Longyuan Coffee Manor, people can experience the process of grinding Xinglong coffee beans into powder. Pour the hand-ground coffee powder into the siphon pot, and with the help of the staff, a pot of authentic Xinglong coffee with strong coffee flavor is brought to the table.

In this manor, in addition to watching machines stir-fry coffee beans, grinding coffee powder and making coffee with siphon pots, people can also find a pleasure of being close to nature in more than 80 mu of coffee farms. During the coffee blooming season in April and May, the thick white flowers on each coffee tree are arranged in clusters, giving off a fragrance. Eyes full of white tube-shaped flowers, the scene is quite spectacular. When it comes to the coffee harvest season, people can put on the traditional bamboo basket and hat to experience the fun of picking coffee.

Although the machine has replaced the manual in charge of stir-frying coffee beans, if you go deep into the prosperity and walk into some local villages, people can still have the honor to see the most traditional scenes of hand-fried coffee beans. In a big iron pot, add butter and stir-fry constantly, and the coffee beans with bright black color emit an attractive aroma on the stove.

Chengmai Fu Mountain

Enjoy the beautiful scenery and taste the fragrant coffee

Like Xinglong, in Hainan, Fushan is a small town that cannot be bypassed when it comes to coffee. This is an important coffee producing area in Hainan, and its status can not be ignored in the coffee history of New China.

Fukuyama's relationship with coffee dates from the 1930s. In 1933, after repeated inspection in Hainan, overseas Chinese Chen Xianzhang decided that the Fushan area with "Pingwu Mianmiao, spring sweet soil, evergreen all seasons and convenient transportation" is an ideal place for the development of coffee industry. Two years later, after several risks, Chen Xianzhang brought back four hemp bags of "Robusta" coffee seeds from Indonesia to be planted in Fushan, becoming the first person to successfully introduce and commercially produce coffee in China.

With the unique volcanic red earth and good climatic conditions, the coffee beans produced by Fukuyama are of high quality. The coffee beans in Fushan area are strong, large, uniform and full. Unlike Xinglong's coffee, the real Fukuyama pure coffee is roasted without sugar or spices. The coffee produced in this way has the excellent quality of full-bodied, mellow and slippery mouth, rich in the unique local coffee flavor of Fushan area of Hainan, and has the quality characteristics of gold Manning coffee in Sumatra, Indonesia.

In the busy streets of many counties in Hainan, Fushan Cafe, the coffee leader of Fushan area, can be seen everywhere. Sitting in the spacious and bright Fushan Cafe and tasting fine Fushan coffee has become the most common way of leisure for people in Hainan. Therefore, in Hainan, if not Chengmai, you can also taste the authentic Fushan coffee here. However, if you want to enjoy the leisure besides coffee, you must come to Fushan in person, take a rest in the shade, taste mellow coffee, taste exquisite snacks and enjoy the picturesque scenery in the green fields of the countryside.

In Fushan Coffee Town, Fushan Cafe is a stop that can't be missed. Fushan Cafe is the first local professional coffee shop in Hainan with a long history. Unlike the noisy cafes in the city, people can not only taste coffee, but also enjoy the natural scenery of Fushan Reservoir. The water waves of Fushan Reservoir are slightly rippling, and the surrounding trees are lush. Drink a cup of mellow coffee on the shore and occasionally see a hovering egret, which is very pleasant.

Fushan Houchen Coffee Culture Village is a comprehensive coffee culture resort with coffee as the theme, leisure and entertainment, catering and accommodation as one. Spain Gaudi naturalistic layout, pavilions, water features, trees snuggle around, all of which can completely integrate your body and mind into nature. In Houchen Village, there are still six coffee trees planted in the 1930s, which is the oldest coffee tree that people can see in Hainan.

Qionghai Boao

The fascinating "taste of coffee"

Compared with the coffee in Xinglong and Fushan, Boao Old Coffee may not be very special if it is felt by the taste buds, but if it is felt by the heart, then the "taste" of Boao Old Coffee will certainly be fascinating.

Walking in Boao, no matter how hot the summer day, there will always be a cool wind through the streets, people can not help but calm down. And in this popular "slow life" town, coffee can also bring peace of mind.

Feed the colorful flowers in the pig trough, green plants protruding from the dilapidated clay jars, old chairs, old sewing machines. In the old house cafe, the shopkeeper picked up ordinary old objects from the countryside, making his "old house" exude a local freshness. If the outdoor sun is strong, then hiding in the old house is the best choice, where the light suddenly softens up, seems to have a hazy feeling. Order a cup of coffee, quietly read the book at hand, enjoy a moment of peace of mind, is the greatest enjoyment.

The Nanyang Pavilion next door to the old house is its "sister chapter." If the old house makes people feel the local flavor of Qionghai, then Nanyang Pavilion makes people have a gorgeous Nanyang dream. Old-fashioned clock, sewing machine, phonograph. In the Nanyang style building, there are all kinds of objects from the old Nanyang. Here, when you order a pot of old Boao coffee in an iron pot, you can taste not only the coffee, but also the nostalgia full of Nanyang color, which makes one cannot help but wonder whether the master's family who lived in this small building would also sit down on the thick wooden chairs and taste the old coffee carefully.

At the Boao seaside where the three rivers enter the sea, a "Story of the Sea" coffee bar, which brings together all the elements of fishing villages, has almost become one of the scenic spots that tourists must visit. Cobblestone paths, fences made of fishing nets, tables and chairs made of boats. Sitting here, tasting coffee and facing the sea, will suddenly give people a beautiful state of mind waiting for spring flowers to blossom.
