By the end of 2012, the planting area of coffee in Yunnan Province has reached 130000 mu. From 390000 mu in 2008 to 1.3 million mu now, the planting area of coffee in Yunnan has tripled in 4 years, showing a momentum of rapid growth.

According to the Yunnan Coffee Industry Development Plan (2010-2020), the coffee planting area of Yunnan Province will reach 1 million mu by 2015 and 1.5 million mu by 2020. Obviously, the target of 1 million mu has been achieved ahead of schedule, and it has been overfulfilled. According to the current growth rate, it is generally believed in the industry that the target of 1.5 million mu will also be completed in the next year or two.

So, is the growth rate of coffee planting area in Yunnan too fast? Li Gongqin, secretary general of Yunnan Coffee Industry Association, once said: "even if all 1.3 million mu of coffee in our province are put into production, that is, 200000 tons, accounting for 2.5% of the world's total output."

It is worth noting that in order to truly establish Yunnan's position in the world coffee planting pattern, the rapid growth of planting area is not enough, but also advanced planting technology and perfect coffee bean quality management system.

At present, in the research and development and promotion of coffee planting technology, in addition to the traditional technology research and development institutions such as the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, there are also new forces from enterprises. On December 12, 2012, the coffee grower support center of the world coffee giant Starbucks was put into operation in Pu'er, which aims to manage and promote coffee and grower equity norms, effectively support and manage the supply chain, and improve coffee quality. At present, its agronomists and quality experts have begun to provide resources and technical support to coffee growers in Yunnan.
