Yunnan Guixia coffee has a short history of cultivation, mainly planted in Baoshan, Yunnan Province. Around 2011, the owner began to study the cultivation of rose summer coffee varieties in Yunnan, and opened up an area in his estate dedicated to the research of rose summer coffee cultivation in Yunnan.
The summer rose variety of Yunnan Aini Manor in China was introduced from Panama in 2012. After nearly five years of cultivation in two manors, Guixia beans grown in Yunnan are mature and stable in quality, have good adaptability to the climate and soil of the region, rust resistance, high yield, strong cold resistance, and especially excellent in cup quality.
At present, we are familiar with the summer rose variety originated from the original forest in Gesha region of Ethiopia. It is an Arabica coffee variety with good disease resistance but low yield. The collection of rose varieties involved harvesting various coffee plants, naming them Gesha and sending them to British plantations in Kenya for research.
In 1936, it was transferred to Tanzania for further research and cultivation, and in 1953, it was introduced to Costa Rica and filed as T2722. In Panama, T2722 was introduced in the 1960s. In order to adapt to the local environment, the variety continuously optimized its genes to form the delicate floral aroma and flavor that we are familiar with now, and became famous in 2004.
Although rose summer coffee became famous, many countries began to grow rose summer coffee beans, but the flavor is not as refined as that grown in Panama's high-altitude areas. Even using rose varieties that have been "tamed" by Panama does not have the same flavor.
As Panama rose to fame, some coffee researchers returned to the rose sampling site based on the data, looking for ancestors and descendants of T2722, hoping to pick a flat version of the wild rose coffee bean, which was indeed found by the researchers, but the relationship can be said to be not close, but there are some common genes.
In terms of flavor, Ethiopia's rose summer coffee beans are not so refined. After all, wild rose summer has not been genetically modified by humans and nature in different regions. Therefore, although the flavor will also have a floral aroma, but not particularly bright, will have an almond aroma, taste is not as rich as Panama rose summer coffee beans.
The same is true of Yunnan's rose summer coffee beans. Whether it is the rose summer with T2722 or the rose summer in Ethiopia, after coming to Yunnan, the flavor of rose summer coffee will also change. One is that the planting altitude is not as high as Africa and Central and South America, and the composition of the soil and climate are also very different.
Rosette coffee varieties grown in Yunnan have a brinkish acidity, a berry tart, a black tea fermentation, and a nutty finish. Floral aspects are not obvious, overall relatively clean and balanced mellow.
Ma Chi, Director of the Hot Work Department of the Agriculture Department of Yunnan Province, also praised Guixia repeatedly. He said that Yunnan coffee varieties are single, most of the coffee farmers grow katim, although Yunnan katim planting quality is good, but the price is not satisfactory. Yunnan finally has its own Guixia, Yunnan needs such high-quality coffee varieties as Guixia to improve the status quo of Yunnan's single variety.
