Do you have the so-called caffeine gene? Recently it was discovered that DNA determines whether we are susceptible to coffee.

Investigators have made it clear that how many cups of coffee we can drink and how much we enjoy the aroma of coffee has long been determined by the body's genes. Genes control our response to coffee.

They say that although this difference is easy for us to ignore, it does affect health.

After analyzing 24 previous studies, Marilyn Cornelis of the Harvard School of Public Health launched a scientific study involving more than 120000 participants. The participants were asked to describe how many cups of coffee they drank in a day and were then scanned by a professional instrument called DNA.

The new Harvard study aims to find subtle differences in the relationship between DNA and how much coffee is consumed. Through experiments, the researchers found eight such genetic variants, two of which have been confirmed to be directly linked to coffee consumption. The findings are published in the Oct. 7 issue of the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

In addition, four new variants of the remaining six genes are associated with caffeine, which either causes its cleavage or is stimulated by caffeine.

Marian Neuhouser, a nutrition researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, says the relationship between genes and coffee consumption may one day help doctors determine whether patients need to quit coffee.

For example, we may advise pregnant women not to drink too much coffee because of the possibility of miscarriage and premature delivery.
