Last Updated: 2024/11/03, Costa Rica's "National newspaper" reported on March 31, 2017 that Costa Rican coffee production in the 2016-2017 coffee season closed at 1.89 million francaga (92600 tons), down 15% from the previous season of 2.23 million franca (about 109300 tons). According to Ronald Peters, executive director of the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (Icafe), the decline in production is partly due to a two-year cycle.

Costa Rica's "National newspaper" reported on March 31, 2017 that Costa Rican coffee production in the 2016-2017 coffee season closed at 1.89 million francaga (92600 tons), down 15% from the previous season of 2.23 million franca (about 109300 tons). According to Ronald Peters, executive director of the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (Icafe), the decline was partly affected by "biennial cyclical production changes" and partly due to coffee harvests affected by Hurricane Otto's transit last October.

After five years of experiments, the Costa Rican Coffee Institute has increased coffee production per hectare from 35 to 63, and even reached 80 in some areas. In addition to the increase in productivity, the improved coffee plants are more resistant to diseases and insect pests, and the quality of coffee produced is also better. After the increase in production, Costa Rican coffee will be sold by an average of US $3900 per hectare, or US $5551 per hectare based on the international price of high-quality coffee. Ronald Peters said it would provide financial support for producers to acquire new coffee plants.
