In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 22 patients with ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation had their electrocardiograms monitored one hour before and after ingesting 275mg of caffeine (equivalent to one to two cups of coffee) and found that caffeine did not induce or aggravate arrhythmia.

Another study of 50 patients with arrhythmia, who were divided into two groups, one group drank decaffeinated coffee and the other group drank coffee with 200mg caffeine (decaffeinated coffee with caffeine added), and monitored for 3 hours. It can be inferred that the biggest culprit directly causing palpitations is not caffeine, but certain alkaloids that are highly toxic to the body.

Highly dangerous alkaloids are most likely to be produced when:
