How to get the most (or least) caffeine from your coffee beans?
Professional barista communication, please pay attention to coffee workshop (Weixin Official Accounts cafe_style)
The average cup of coffee contains about 100 milligrams of coffee. Espresso coffee usually contains as little as 50 milligrams at a time, and a cup of coffee drops can easily contain 200 milligrams of caffeine. That's a lot of change!
Without a lab test or guidelines, determining caffeine levels in coffee and coffee drinks can be tricky, and keeping caffeine consumption below the recommended 300 milligrams per day can be even harder.
Or over 300 if that's what you're getting into. I don't recommend it particularly, but drinking so much caffeine seems to be a popular activity for many these days.
Here is a handy list of caffeine levels in different coffee beverages. Here is a list of Starbucks caffeine levels. Two great general references. However, they do not include everything, and some caffeine is an estimate.
Why caffeine level estimates and not accuracy? There are many factors that affect the caffeine content of different coffee drinks, such as coffee, French coffee and drip coffee.
Whether you are looking for less caffeine or more, this guide will help you make more informed decisions about the coffee beverages you consume and how much caffeine they contain.
Caffeine content of caffeine
Many people believe that darker coffee roasts have more caffeine because they have a stronger flavor.
However, darker roasts generally have lower caffeine content than lighter roasts. This is because longer roasting heat destroys caffeine molecules, or roasting "burns off caffeine" as some people prefer to place it.
Cool tidbit: don't know your coffee's roast? Just look at the color.
Lighter colors mean lighter roasting and more caffeine.
Coffee beans caffeine levels coffee beans
Different levels of coffee grinding are used for different brewing methods. Espresso and Turkish coffee, for example, require a better coffee grind level than drip coffee.
Assuming the brewing method is the same, the finer the coffee is ground, the higher the caffeine level of the coffee.
Caffeine in coffee bean varieties
Like different tea varieties, different coffee varieties and varieties have naturally varying levels of caffeine.
Robusta coffee beans (coffee beans used in many low-end coffees and instant coffees) have about twice as much caffeine as Arabica coffee beans (Coffee beans are softer and sweeter than coffee beans, making up 70% of coffee beans). I wonder what you're drinking? If it's an instant coffee, it's probably a higher-caffeine Robusta coffee bean. If it's a coffee shop, a decent restaurant, drip coffee pot, ground beans or whole beans, probably from decaffeinated coffee beans.
Cool tidbit: A natural decaf coffee bean called Excelsa (not caffeine coffee) is sometimes mixed with Arabica to produce a less caffeinated coffee.
Coffee Brewing Methods for Caffeine Levels
Different coffee brewing methods require different brewing times.
The longer coffee is brewed, the higher the caffeine content. For example, French press coffee that sits longer before the plunger is depressed will have higher caffeine levels. So also drip coffee from the coffee machine (it often takes about 5 minutes to brew). And long-drink coffee (large, slow espresso extract) will have higher levels of caffeine than ristretto (smaller, faster espresso extract).
Similarly, if you brew coffee with more ground coffee per measurement of water, there will be more caffeine in the brew. Most coffee recipes require about 30 grams of coffee per 12 to 16 ounces of water. Using more caffeine also increases caffeine levels in coffee, and many people accidentally use more (or the "eyeball method," if you can call it a method!) because of the use of a measuring spoon. rather than the scale used to make coffee.
Caffeine content in pre-made coffee
According to Thrillist, the Center for Public Interest and Energy Technology, coffee coffee varies widely in coffee levels. A cup of coffee from McDonald's contains half as much caffeine as Starbucks, and a cup of coffee from Reindeer Coffee is somewhere in between.
Five tips: What can you do?
Read about caffeine levels in popular coffee drinks in the United States.
Isn't your favorite coffee listed? Some chain coffee retailers will offer caffeine on request. Ask them if they can tell you
Note that many coffeepot drinks contain more milk and spices than coffee, which means less coffee. Something else means taking less caffeine per serving.
Make your own coffee instead. A lab test compared caffeine levels in Starbucks breakfast coffee blends to a Starbucks outlet for six consecutive days. Caffeine levels range from 299.5 mg per 16-ounce ("Grande") cup (add chocolate half and you reach the recommended daily limit) to 564.4 mg (almost double the daily limit). This has to do with changes in the beans, but it may have to do with changes in brewing. Oops!
When suspicion order small!
So what is the most caffeinated coffee?
If you look at all these factors together, the highest caffeine coffee will be a lightly roasted, finely ground (Turkish ground or espresso) coffee. Robusta coffee has been brewed for five minutes or more in a drip filter coffee pot or French press. Using more than the usual 30 grams of coffee per 12 to 16 ounces of water also increases the caffeine content of coffee.
Which espresso has the most caffeine?
Except for using 7 to 8 grams (relatively coarse grind) of coffee grind instead of brewing in French press/drip coffee machines, making it a lung.
Which coffee has the least caffeine?
If you look at all of the above factors, you will find that black coffee brewed with a faster brewing method, coarsely ground Arabica beans (such as pour drip filters) will have the least caffeine.
Be sure to measure your grinds on a scale (no spoon, absolutely no eyes) to make sure you only use 30 grams per 12 to 16 ounces of water (about two reasonable portions, Starbucks large or high). For ultra-low caffeine coffee, use decaf * or blend with Excelsa beans.
* Despite popular belief to the contrary, decaf is not caffeine. A 16-ounce decaf coffee from Starbucks still contains about 12.5 milligrams of caffeine, while Starbucks espresso coffee has a larger range-3 to 15.8 milligrams per serving.
A reminder to order coffee drinks: premium coffee drinks (drinks with milk and other additives) usually contain less caffeine per serving. A little caffeine is far less than a big one!
Which espresso has the lowest caffeine?
Seven grams of black roast, compared to the coarser Robusta beans pulled as a separate ristretto shot with less caffeine than other espresso shots. For ultra-low caffeine ristretto, use decaf or blend with Excelsa beans.
Cool bit: …Coffee o…It may be more concentrated than a cup of Joe, but espresso is actually lower in caffeine. But be careful! The standard size for many coffee shops is "double tap."
How to reduce caffeine to no more than 300 mg per day?
Caffeine overdose and caffeine sensitivity are both seriously unpleasant, and too much caffeine can be dangerous to your health. If you want to reduce the buzz or keep it within a healthy limit, here are some great ways to do just that.
Order small brew small buy coffee. Do not drink more coffee than coffee. When you can order something smaller, don't order something larger.
Remember, caffeine isn't just in coffee! Caffeine is also found in tea, chocolate, cola and other substances, such as aspirin. If you also consume these substances, then you can also reduce these substances.
Follow these caffeine reduction tips. They will help a lot!
