Nkara Musasha Cooperative of Rwanda
Rwanda used to hold the "extraordinary Cup" (Rwandan Cup of Excellence), after the interruption, there is now a new bidding system to replace, this coffee is from the latest bidding batch. Nkara this coffee is produced by the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative cooperative in Musasa in northern Rwanda and is a vivid expression of the local active and complex washing bourbon flavor.
Nkala (Nkara) is one of three washing plants in Dukunde Kawa, and 386 coffee farmers nearby send the fresh fruit to be processed. It is a small washing plant on the scale of Rwanda and is managed by Michel Dusengimana. Dukunde Kawa means "love coffee" in Rwanda.
Founded in 2000, the Love Coffee Cooperative established its first washing plant, Ruli washing station, in 2003, funded by the Rwandan government and the Pearl Project (PEARL: Partnership for Enhancing Agriculture in Rwanda through Linkages), a mentoring program for coffee farmers funded by care (USAID). The goal is to shift Rwandan coffee from mass production to quality.
After more than ten years of development, remarkable results have been achieved, the quality of coffee has been significantly improved, and Fairtrade certification has been obtained in 2005. The area of land cultivated by surrounding coffee farmers is very small, usually only 1 hectare and 4 hectares, with 200 or 300 coffee trees. Dukunde Kawa combines the fresh fruits of these small farmers to provide fertilizers, organic herbicides, and farming and agronomic knowledge.
With a total membership of more than 2000, Dukunde Kawa is one of the largest cooperatives in Rwanda. In addition to Nkala and Luli, the three treatment plants also have a Mbilima washing plant.
