Flat White and American Coffee-Do You Really Know How to Make Them?
Try the difference between two different brews
At first glance, a cup of brewed coffee and American coffee look very similar. After all, they are all made from coffee and hot water. But these two classic drinks are made in a very unique way and have a rich taste. Learn about the differences in this helpful illustration. For comparison purposes, we use Starbucks espresso and Starbucks PikePlace® roast.
Americano starts with espresso
The only way to prepare real espresso is to use a dedicated machine that delivers rich espresso on top, unparalleled bold flavor and distinctive creamy (foam layer). Because of the strong flavor, many people mix espresso with water, and that's how you make Americana. This is our wonderfully rich mug made with Starbucks® espresso roast coffee's unique caramel sweetness. (By the way, any coffee bean technically can be used for espresso, espresso just refers to how finely ground it is and then brewed.)
Coffee trivia
Rumor has it that GIs appeared when American soldiers stationed in Italy during World War II watered down local espresso to make it more like coffee from home.
brewing coffee
There may be only one way to make coffee, but there are many ways to make coffee. Freshly brewed drip coffee uses gravity rather than force to push water through coffee grounds. The hot water dissolves much of the ground, then passes through a paper, cloth or metal filter, and into a glass or carafe, ready to enjoy. Instead of a strong espresso flavor, you'll get more subtle nuances from the beans you choose. For example, with our classic Starbucks Pike Cafe Roast®, the result is strong coffee, cocoa and roasted nuts that coffee lovers crave.
Americano or drip coffee: There is no Americano coffee in America.
