Burundian Coffee processing Plant: Jiacenko Gakenke washing Plant

The Gakenke washing plant was built in 1991 and is located in Kayanza province, north of Burundi, near the border with Rwanda, which has always been the best coffee producing area in Burundi.

In 2016, Burundi stopped holding the Outstanding Cup for one year and replaced it with the "Best Burundi" (2016 Best of Burundi) raw bean contest. As a result, two batches of Gacenko won the championship and runner-up, with a score of 91.70!

The company responsible for managing Gacanco is Greenco in Geneva, whose founder, Fran ç ois Bercher, has an extraordinary love for Burundi. With his background in the trade of raw beans for many years, he has established good relations with producers in Burundi. After setting up his own company in Switzerland, in order to ensure the quality of raw beans, he decided to go deep into the management of the washing plant. Greenco currently manages a total of 13 washing plants in Burundi, all in Kajanza province. Greenco began to operate in 2015 and won 11 victories in the Burundi extraordinary Cup in the first year, including the champion! In the second year of last year, Greenco almost won the Best of Burundi, winning 8 seats out of 10 awards!

The manager of Champion washing Factory Gacenco is Gratien Nankwahombaye, who has been working in the washing plant since 2013 and is passionate about the job. He has a high demand for quality and strictly requires that farmers can only pick fully ripe red cherries. Coffee farmers in Cajanza province have excellent working habits, which reduces the workload of Gratien a lot.

Jiakenke Water washing Plant has 2685 registered farmers' members. Cherry fresh fruit is collected from 22 hills near Gatare (collines). The average small farmer has only 300 coffee trees on average. Jiakenke and other Greenco washing plants are divided into 12 collection sites to collect fresh fruit, which saves a lot of time for fresh fruit to arrive at the washing plant. The washing plant has two floating water screening tanks, 10 fermentation tanks and two soaking tanks, and 150 drying beds.
