Burundi may not be the leader in the global coffee market, but it is trying to increase its productivity. Coffee cultivation in Burundi is affected by the political and social problems encountered by its neighbour Congo. It mainly affects the future sustainability of the market.
In the northern mountains of a small landlocked country, specialty coffee is becoming a source of hope and opportunity. The Ngozi region, known for its high elevations, heavy rainfall and rich volcanic soil, has been committed to realizing its potential since the coffee industry was privatized in 2009. The coffee comes from small farms in northern Burundi: Ngozi and Kayanza provinces.
Sometimes referred to as the African Alps, the remote mountains of Burundi have small backyard cafes with 250-600 coffee trees per farm. The entire growing community in Burundi is based on smallholder farmers. Farmers take their cherries to the laundry station not far from the farm. Thirteen washing plants support more than 40,000 farmers in the area.
Burundi Ngozi is a medium concentration of coffee with moderate acidity. After thorough cleaning, it has bright and lively flavors of orange peel and cranberry.
Other pairs to consider are dark chocolate, dried fruit or butter pretzels. Here, I would like to highlight the aroma of black tea by using Teavana Royal English breakfast tea in marshmallows with dark chocolate, fresh orange peel and dried cranberries. Sometimes I think coffee is a kind of adult hot chocolate. I like to put down homemade marshmallows and watch them melt in the coffee and let the taste and aroma wrap the coffee.
By visiting two coffee producers in Burundi, we feel that we can add more value to Zuberi and help him, even though his coffee quality will not be as high as Green Co. This is the beauty of building relationships with coffee producers for us, because we can communicate throughout the year, discuss ideas and collaborate on improvement or innovation. Similar to our cooperation with other countries-such as Rwanda and our partner Muraho Trading Co.
The most intensive area of Ngozi coffee production is in northern Burundi, where 25 per cent of the country's wet processing plants are located.
Altitude: average 1650 m
Harvest time: April-July
