Grind the coffee powder, put it on the filter paper, rinse it down slowly with water, and extract the amber hand to make the coffee. Many coffee fans like to brew coffee by hand at home. One of the most important tools for hand-brewing coffee is the filtering tool, including coffee filter paper, metal coffee filter, coffee filter cloth and so on. Each tool has its own advantages, and the flavor of the coffee is different. The most important thing is to find out what is right for you.

01 | Coffee filter paper

Coffee filter paper was invented by Melitta Bentz, a German housewife at the beginning of the 20th century. She used blotting paper to make coffee filter paper and later even started a company. Paper coffee filter paper is the oldest and most reliable way. the principle is to use the extremely dense fibers of the paper to separate the ground coffee powder and filter the extracted coffee essence into the cup, while good filter paper can filter out impurities. the more mellow and fragrant the coffee tastes.

Advantages: convenient, disposable, clean taste and less impurity.

Disadvantages: less environmentally friendly; unbleached paper will have a paper flavor; oil will be filtered out, resulting in coffee oil-free taste.

02 | Metal Coffee filter

With the rise of environmental awareness, some manufacturers have developed metal filters that can be recycled, and metal coffee filters made of stainless steel are also durable and strong. It is recommended to use a clean toothbrush and soda powder to remove oil after use, so as not to affect the taste of the next brewing. In addition to environmental protection, the biggest difference between the metal coffee net and the paper filter paper is that it can also extract the oil, which will be thicker in taste and closer to the original taste of coffee beans.

Advantages: environmental protection, recycling, saving money. More able to drink the original taste of coffee, the taste is thick.

Disadvantages: fine powder is easy to cause excessive extraction, resulting in excessive bitterness; fine powder will pass through the filter into the coffee and may have dregs.

03 | Coffee filter cloth

The most commonly used filter cloth is flannel (Flano), which is a soft, suede woolen fabric made of coarse cotton wool yarn. The fiber of flannel filter cloth is thicker than filter paper, and the coarse fat will be attached to flannel, so the more times you use it, the longer the contact time between hot water and coffee powder will be. Therefore, the extract obtained by flannel coffee filter is generally thicker than filter paper.

However, it should be noted that the new flannel may be attached with fluorescent agent, bleach and so on, so the new flannel needs to be boiled in hot water. Compared with filter paper, flannel net has larger fibers, softer texture and no smell of paper, so it can retain more oil in the coffee liquid and thus produce a better thickness of caffeine.

Advantages: flannel filter cloth has better permeability and heat preservation, and the aroma and taste of coffee brewed are more saturated and richer than that of filter paper.

Disadvantages: it is not easy to save, it takes time and labor, and requires more practice and skills.

The three coffee filtering tools have their own strengths and weaknesses, so choose the most suitable coffee filtering tool according to your favorite coffee taste.
