Sierra Leone coffee beans
Coffee, like cocoa, is one of the main cash crops in Sierra Leone and is grown mainly in the rainforest areas of the southern and eastern provinces of the country.
The Republic of Sierra Leone is located in West Africa, bordering Liberia and Guinea in the south-east, and east and north. The Atlantic Ocean lies in the west and southwest.
Sierra Leone's climate is usually tropical, despite environments ranging from tropical rain forests to prairies. The country is rich in mineral resources and is one of the top ten diamond producers in the world.
Major coffee growing areas include Moyumba, Bo, Kenema, Pujuhem, Kono and Kailhahun. Less coffee is grown in Kundugu and Tonkolili areas in the northern province of Sierra Leone.
Coffee production in Sierra Leone was affected by the civil war
The civil war from 1991 to 2002 reduced Sierra Leone's coffee production from about 15000 tons per year to about 2000 tons per year. Coffee farmers were displaced by the war and coffee cultivation was abandoned.
Although many people have returned to their farms, most of the coffee trees have not yet recovered. Problems include labour shortages, severe poverty and a lack of technology to improve production and processing methods.
Many coffee trees have become wild, and some former coffee plantations have been moderately managed to get some yield.
Coffee production in Sierra Leone depends on new investment
If the recent surge in world coffee prices can be sustained, the Sierra Leonean coffee market may finally come back to life through new investment in improved coffee varieties with higher yields. However, more attention has been paid to the resumption of cocoa production.
There is a large area of land in Sierra Leone that is considered suitable for growing coffee, but whether it will increase coffee cultivation remains to be seen.
With the massive cultivation of wild coffee in the country, Sierra Leone produces more and more organic coffee.
Sierra Leone has a population of about 6.2 million, most of whom live in poverty. Another problem is government corruption, so continued instability could hinder a significant increase in coffee production in Sierra Leone.
