If you haven't heard of Chemex before (and stumbled across this page), let me explain Chemex. Chemex was designed by the eccentric inventor and chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm in the early 1940s. Schlumbohm's personal mission is to make everyday items more practical, more beautiful and, most importantly, pleasant to use.

His background as a chemist enabled him to study how effluent interacts with coffee beans and how to extract the greatest flavor from ground coffee beans. Dr. Schlumbohm's knowledge and his design know-how led to Chemex, one of the most iconic coffee pots.

Many people don't know this, but Chemex's design is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the 1940 design. The contrast between hourglass beakers, wooden handles and leather rope led a famous designer to call it a "combination of logic and madness". Even in the very fashionable TV series Mad Men, I have seen this scene in the kitchen of the infamous Don Draper. But perhaps the most important proof of Chemex's beautiful design is that it is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
