The Red Cherry Project (Operation Cherry Red), which focuses on farmers, recently relaxed restrictions across the country that all coffee must be sold through the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX), making it possible.

Trabocca said it had paid a floor price of $5 per pound of primary coffee auctioned from small farmers in Ethiopia's high-altitude coffee fields, and another $2.50 would be spent on the organization and logistics of the auction. Except for the basic price of $7.50, all proceeds will be made available directly to farmers who grow each type of coffee during the rest of the procurement trip, according to a statement from Trabocca today.

Next week, a panel of 11 coffee professionals will select the final finalists for the auction at Trabocca's Amsterdam headquarters, including Anette Moldvaer, chief judge of the UK's Square Mile coffee roasting company, Rubens Gardelli of Italy's Gardelli Specialty coffee and Kentaro Maruyama of Japan's Maruyama coffee. The auction will be held on Thursday, May 31, where potential buyers can register for more information.
