In 1961, CENICAFE, a coffee institute in Colombia, began research and field trials in Hibrido de Timor. By 1968, the same organization had combined Timorese hybrids with the popular Caturra varieties, and the project continued with greater strength throughout the 1970s. In 1982, CENICAFE introduced the Colombian variety, which is the product of five generations of breeding and backcrossing of the Catimor line, which aims to combine disease resistance with excellent cup quality and yield.

Research continued into the 1980s and 1990s, even accelerating the race to find a truly drug-resistant strain without sacrificing taste. In 2002, CENICAFE introduced Tabi varieties: varieties obtained by crossing with Typica, Bourbon and Timor. One of the most important attributes is its resistance to coffee leaf rust, but it also shows good cup quality characteristics of its bourbon and typical parents.

Tabi is very similar in shape to bourbon and Typica in that it is a tall, long branch; however, its fruit and seeds are slightly larger. It can be planted at high density (up to 3000 trees per hectare) and is suitable for high altitude areas.

The name Tabi means "good" in the dialect of Guambiano (Colombian indigenous tribes).
