Bayardo Reyes grew up on a coffee farm in Matagalba, Nicaragua. In the 1920s, his grandfather set up a coffee farm in the mountains. But when Santanista came to power in Nicaragua in the late 1970s, they confiscated the family's farm and distributed it to several farmers. In 1984, in order to protect him from the conflict in the country, Bayado's mother sent him to Miami to live with an aunt. Bayado joined the U. S. army, but was still filled with a strong desire to return to the coffee industry in Nicaragua. He asked his mother to find a piece of land to grow coffee, and in 1991 he bought 150 acres of cloud forest near Matagalpa.

Bayardo's first task in running the coffee farm has always been to help his countrymen improve the lives of farm workers. Although he still lives in the United States and works for the United States military, he goes to the farm several times a year to keep a close eye on farm activities. When he first bought the land, it didn't have any buildings. Over time, he built some structures, such as workers' housing. He imported solar panels and wind turbines to provide some of the electricity. In order to improve the toilets and sanitary conditions on the farm, he installed a grey water circulation system. He funded a teacher to educate farm workers and their children. He hired a professional barista to guide the improvement of coffee quality. He hired a group of locals to improve the main road to the farm, and it took them weeks to lay rubble.

Nossa Familia's relationship with Finca San Jose dates back to 2012. At the beginning of the 21st century, Bayado's wife, Yurfa, studied with Nossa Familia's boss, Augusto, in England. Bayardo and Augusto met in SCAA, Portland, and began to build a relationship. In 2013, Augusto and Will, production managers of Nossa Familia, visited the farm. They plan to buy 30 bags and work with Sustainable Harvest to free up some space in one of their containers to transport the bags to Portland. Since then, Nossa Familia has bought more and more Bayardo coffee every year and helped with several projects on the farm, including building greenhouses and providing solar lights for workers.
