It is believed that coffee was first introduced to Honduras by European businessmen at the end of the 18th century. Records show that by the mid-19th century, people had set up farms and began to grow coffee on a small scale.

Honduras has the climatic and geographical conditions necessary to produce high-quality coffee. However, due to the lack of infrastructure to benefit other coffee-growing countries in the region, Honduras has historically struggled to produce specialty coffee on a par with its neighbours. Over the years, this has meant that most of the country's coffee has been downgraded to commercial-grade blends.

Owing to the lack of organized trade infrastructure and high export taxes, it is a common practice to smuggle Honduran coffee to neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador, where coffee prices are higher. Eventually, the government began to distribute more tax revenue to producers in the form of technical assistance, thereby improving production and quality. As the value of coffee in Honduras increases, producers find it more profitable to export coffee legally than to smuggle coffee across the border.

In recent years, Honduras has become one of the most important coffee producers in the world. In 2011, Honduras overtook Guatemala to become the largest coffee producer in Central America and is now the seventh largest coffee producer in the world. The coffee industry has also noticed the excellent quality of Honduran coffee.

Atlas works closely with our partners in Honduras and we have seen amazing progress in just a few years. We are very proud of our long-standing relationship with advanced factories such as o San Vicente in Santa Barbara and innovative cooperatives such as COCAFCAL in Las Capkas and COMSA in Makala. Together we have witnessed a qualitative leap in the quality of coffee and the dedication of farmers, and now the best coffee in Honduras usually gets the same score as the top coffee in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Honduras offers a wide variety of flavors. This coffee cup features a wide range of flavors, from super sweet and creamy coffee with chocolate to vibrant acidity and medium-bodied tropical and citrus fruits.
