Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society is an organization of 19 small wet mills ("factories") located in and around Othaya Town, Nyeri County. The association was registered in 1956, when it had 250 farmers, and has since grown to more than 15000 members. Their office is located in the center of town, and the Gatuyaini factory is their production center, less than a kilometer up the hill from the main office. Many factors make Othaya unique, the most important of which is strong social solidarity, a holistic approach to enterprise management and a progressive view of quality control throughout the supply chain. The association has nurseries and farm shops that provide inputs, equipment and seedlings for its members. Farm management workshops are regularly provided and factory managers are regularly trained in wet grinding best practices. Othaya has sample baking and cup testing facilities in the Gatuyaini factory, and the association staff will cup test each batch of samples during the harvest season.
