This is a huge time and land investment, only for a short harvest period and an annual return. If you lose a crop because of a disease or drought, it may take you six years to see an income!
Now let's consider all these logistical issues. Workers must be brought in to complete the harvest. They come from all parts of the area, so during the harvest season, they have to live and eat on plantations. Since this is a big annual income for coffee pickers, they work as hard as they can during these three months, earning about $1.30 for every two baskets of coffee they pick.
