Kenyan variety
In 1929, the British-run Agricultural Research Centre Scott Agricultural Laboratories (SL) in Kenya sent an entomologist, a plant breeder and a mycologist to carefully study Kenya and its southern neighbor Tanzania to isolate coffee trees that are resistant to drought and disease and produce better fruit. Over the next four years, the team isolated 42 varieties. In the 1950s, after years of experimentation, they launched two very successful coffees, which now dominate coffee production in Kenya: SL-28 and SL-34.
SL-28
This is a wild tree found in Tanzania; in addition to putting delicious fruit in coffee cups, it has an almost super-powerful ability to survive years of complete neglect and then resume production with proper care.
SL-34
SL-34, found on an estate in Cabette, Kenya, is mistakenly called a "French envoy" because it is mistakenly believed to be a descendant of a bourbon breed brought by French missionaries. Like many origin stories, this story has more to do with legends than facts: recent genetic tests have shown that SL34 is more closely related to another, more common breed, Typica.
