Manning is made in Sumatra, Indonesia, also known as Sumatran Coffee. The main producing areas of Indonesian coffee are Java, Sulawesi and Sumatra. In 1877, a large-scale disaster hit the Indonesian islands, coffee rust destroyed almost all the coffee trees, people had to give up Arabica, which had been in operation for many years, and introduced the disease-resistant Robusta coffee tree from Africa. Robusta species account for 90% of today's Indonesian coffee beans. Sumatra Manning is a rare Arabica species. The trees are planted on hillsides between 750m and 1500 m above sea level.

The history of coffee in Indonesia dates back to 1699, when the Dutch first planted Arabica saplings on the island of Java.
