Producers of Lisa do Horala in Colombia introduce the source and flavor of washed pink bourbon coffee.
Lisa do Horala
This is the first time Lizardo Herrera has exported boutique coffee because his batches have been rejected by several exporters in the past few years.
He knows very well how to go through the fermentation process to affect the flavor, so his coffee is more fermented than other Vera coffees. He thinks this is why most raw bean exporters refuse to accept his coffee.
He is also a beekeeper, keeping several beehives on the farm to produce honey for export, which is high in the sustainability of Lisado's farm, because pesticides are harmful to honey populations. And bees allow plants to keep good pollination. And bees need shade, just like coffee.
The shade trees on the farm have a history of more than 50 years. When his grandfather bought the farm, these shade trees already existed. The general practice was to clean up the crops or plants on the farm and grow coffee. But Lisado's grandfather knew the value of these trees, so he did not cut down the shade trees at that time.
Lisado's father later took over the farm, absorbing large amounts of organic agricultural waste near Palestine, composting it and selling it, while also managing the farm. Lisa absorbed his father's experience and applied it to the farm.
The source of pink bourbon of rare bean seed
Pink bourbon (Pink Bourbon) is an extremely rare bean seed, far less than Geisha or Pacamara.
Even if coffee farmers find red bourbon in their farmland, they are too rare to deal with it alone, so they were unknown in the past.
Pink bourbon is a hybrid of yellow bourbon and red bourbon, with strong disease resistance and delicious taste, but it is not easy to maintain a stable yield and the yield is very low. Another challenge is that it is difficult for workers to tell whether they are mature or not (mature pink is extremely difficult to judge).
The reason why pink bourbon was discovered is actually quite accidental. A farmer in Vera, Colombia, found pink bourbon coffee trees on the fields of nearby coffee farmers for the first time. When the bourbon matures, it is neither red nor yellow, but pink.
At that time, no one had seen this variety, and the research unit was just beginning to notice the variety and investigate who had a red bourbon. After the cup test, the flavor of pink bourbon is quite unique and complicated, which is quite different from the general red bourbon.
This rare pink bourbon comes from Lizardo Herrera, a coffee farmer in Vera, Columbia, who collects fresh fruit manually and washes it.
