This area has a unique geographical location, which is very suitable for coffee production, but is vulnerable to climate change. Coffee plays an extremely important social and economic role in this area, providing employment opportunities for many people.

In the 1920s, many immigrants came to the area, mostly to grow coffee. During the economic depression around 2000, many people began to emigrate to other regions or countries.

The regional capital is also the transportation hub of Caldas and Quindio, and the road network between the two provinces is called Autopista Del Cafe.
