A recent study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a medical journal, found that women consuming too much caffeine during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, Hong Kong's Wen Wei Po reported. The researchers found that if pregnant women drank two or more cups of coffee a day, the risk of miscarriage was twice as high as those who did not drink caffeinated drinks.

During the two-year period from October 1996 to October 1998, Kaiser Permanente Research, a US health care agency, surveyed 1063 pregnant women who drank the same amount of caffeinated drinks during pregnancy as before. There were 172 pregnant women with final miscarriage, accounting for 16% of the total.

A variety of drinks also contain caffeine

The results showed that pregnant women who consumed more than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day, that is, more than two cups of coffee or five cans of 12 oz caffeinated sodas, had a twice higher risk of miscarriage than those who did not consume caffeine at all. Pregnant women who consumed less than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day also had a 40% higher risk of miscarriage than those without caffeine.

Dr. Li Dekun, who participated in the study, pointed out that the results show that there is a very close relationship between caffeine intake and miscarriage, rather than other chemicals in coffee that cause miscarriage, because when pregnant women drink other caffeinated drinks, such as soda, tea and hot chocolate, the risk of miscarriage increases accordingly.

Should abstain from drinking for at least 3 months

Li Dekun also said that many previous studies have pointed out that caffeine is harmful to pregnant women because caffeine can cause abnormal metabolism of embryos and slow down the blood circulation of the placenta, causing damage to the fetus.

Li Dekun suggested that pregnant women or women who want to get pregnant should quit drinking coffee for at least three months, and it would be better not to drink a drop during pregnancy. But if you really love coffee, "try to control your consumption, one cup a day, up to two cups a day," or switch to other decaffeinated drinks.
