Drinking coffee increases muscle strength in the elderly and reduces their chances of falling, according to a study presented at the American Society for Experimental Biology.

Exercise scientists at the University of Coventry in the UK used mice to explore whether caffeine boosts muscle strength in the elderly. To study the effect of caffeine on muscle strength, the researchers classified the muscle types of mice by age.

The results showed that caffeine enhanced the muscle strength of two different skeletal muscles of mice, but this effect was not seen in young mice, but was more pronounced in older mice. Jason Taris, author of the study, said: caffeine has a beneficial effect on muscle strength in the elderly, so it can be consumed in moderation. The total daily intake of caffeine should not exceed 250 mg, which is equivalent to 2 cups of coffee.
