Yirgacheffe is a world-famous coffee town located in Sidama province in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. Because the coffee produced has obvious discrimination with neighboring regions, its flavor is unique and popular, so it is independent of a production area in terms of product classification. Not all coffee from Sidamo Province can be called Yega Xuefei. Only coffee produced in Yega Xuefei region with unique citrus aroma can be called "Yega Xuefei." In 2004, Yega Xuefei was even registered as a trademark patent by international enterprises, and it was not until the Ethiopian government launched an international lawsuit in 2007 that it was able to return the beautiful name to Ethiopia.
The Dumeso Cooperative, founded in 1975, is located in the southeast of Yegashiffi. the coffee beans harvested mainly come from local small coffee farmers, and the cooperative is also made up of a large number of local small farmers. Dumeso has joined the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union,YCFCU since its establishment. At present, there are more than 2200 small coffee farmers, and the average planting area of each small farmer is less than 4 hectares, which is a typical local planting pattern. Every one or two years, the Dumeso Cooperative will vote to elect an executive committee, and the committee will decide on the procurement of new equipment, the mode of transaction with its members, and so on. YCFCU will also send special personnel to the cooperative to provide advice and technology on production, harvest, quality, and so on. It does not seem like much to have a co-operative, but for coffee farmers, they can avoid exploitation by international traders. When economic conditions arise, they can also obtain loans through co-operatives, and they can even receive guidance on the improvement of planting quality. It's very important for small farmers.
Water washing technology was introduced to Ethiopia in the 1970s, and it can pick out many immature and hollow coffee fruits, thus making Yega Xuefei taste brighter and sour and clear. make Ethiopian coffee famous in the international community. The Dumeso Cooperative has its own water washing plant, and the production mode is that small farmers nearby harvest the ripe "coffee cherry" red fruits and send them directly to the water washing plant for peel washing and fermentation. after washing, the raw beans with shells are placed on the scaffolding for natural exposure until the humidity is below 12%. They are sent directly to the warehouse of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) for cup testing, grading and then sent to the auction venue.
