Coffee is not a novelty in Myanmar, but a long-established crop. Western missionaries brought coffee beans to Myeik and Dawei in Burma at the end of the 19th century. Farmers at that time mainly cultivated robasta coffee. Until the 1930s, Catholic missionaries brought Arabica coffee to other Burmese areas, such as Shan State.
Myanmar is located in the tropical region, warm and rainy, fertile land, as long as it is a mountainous area with good drainage is very suitable for growing coffee. According to the Myanmar Coffee Association, Myanmar produced 268 tons of coffee in 1935-36, of which 175 tons were exported, but these economic activities ceased in the 60 years after the closure.
As in other Asian countries, three-in-one coffee is king in Myanmar.
In the past, Myanmar's methods of processing coffee beans were very traditional. Coupled with the lack of electricity in the country, the simple storage method easily led to mold; and the manual frying technology was easy to over-roast. Although the output of Myanmar coffee is quite large, the finished product is mainly economical and instant.
Until 2011, the year of democratic reforms in Myanmar, the Government was committed to combating the poppy industry in the country. With the assistance of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and voluntary organizations and coffee associations, coffee agriculture, which has been around for more than 200 years in Myanmar, has become an alternative to opium poppy cultivation, enabling small farmers to sustain their livelihoods. These institutions and organizations have rapidly improved the yield and quality of Myanmar coffee beans, and the specialties related to coffee culture-from roasting, tasting, to brewing and identification-have emerged as a new choice for Myanmar's economy and trade and for the new generation to connect with the world. According to Myanmar's Ministry of Trade, Myanmar exported 1137 tons of coffee beans in 2015- 16, more than double the exports in 2011-12.
As Myanmar opens up to the outside world, both international chain brands and local small coffee shops can be found almost everywhere in major cities such as Yangon. Many foreign businessmen even invite internationally renowned professionals to hold regular classes in major cities to promote coffee culture among the trade and even the general public. Burmese coffee has recently received increasing international attention. If you have a chance to visit Myanmar, you must taste this internationally renowned Burmese flavor!
