[about Mutheka processing plant]
The Mutheka Cooperative, founded in 2000 in Nyeri in central Kenya, has seven different processing stations where members deliver their harvested coffee cherries for processing. We always buy coffee at Nyeri because it is recognized as the best producing area, and after tasting thousands of local coffees, Chorongi has always been one of our favorite choices every year.
Traditionally, Nyeri farmers continue to plant SL28 and SL34 varieties, but due to the serious situation of leaf rust and berry disease, cooperatives began to encourage farmers to plant more disease-resistant Ruiru11 varieties, and in recent years also planted a new variety Batian with better flavor. Chorongi has distributed / sold Batian seedlings to its members in the past five years, which means that there may be more opportunities to taste this coffee in the future. So far, the change of varieties has no significant negative effect on the quality of coffee. Kenyan coffee still has strong fruit tone and good flavor.
Flavor:
The dry aroma of ground beans gives off sweet aromas of honey, caramel and cream, while the aromas of berries become lively when cooked; the entrance is bright and varied, just like fruit tea without added sugar; the sweetness of the end of ripe fruit acid to cranberries stays in the mouth.
Nieli is located in the Aberdare Mountains to Mount Kenya (Mt. The promontory between Kenya, with an average elevation of more than 1500 meters, has fertile soil and shade trees such as Grevillea, Macadamia, Eucalyptus, etc., making it an important boutique coffee producing area in Kenya. Mutheka Farmers Cooperative Society is a large farmers' cooperative in this producing area, whose members include nearly 2, 000 farmers. It began to grow coffee in the 1950s, each farmer takes care of more than 300 coffee trees. There are seven raw bean processing plants in the cooperative: Kiandu, Kihuyo, Kaiguri, Kigwandi, Chorongi, Muthuaini, Kamuyu.
