Mexico borders the United States to the north, and its coffee production ranks fourth in the world. It is mainly produced in the southeast adjacent to the Vivitenango Highlands of Guatemala. About 70% of Mexico's coffee is exported directly to the United States, where it is washed and divided into three grades according to height. Generally speaking Mexican coffee is rated as moderate aroma and lighter alcohol. Among them, the giant elephant bean tree Maragogipe (also known as Maragogype) produces coffee beans that are not only three times larger than normal, but also known for their mellow and round taste.

Coffee production, cultivation and harvesting in Mexico have been in slow decline for several years due to adverse weather conditions such as cold and atypical rainfall. However, coffee rust is currently the most important factor affecting area reduction. Of course, price fluctuations also have an impact.

Planted area in 2016/17 is estimated at 717,336 hectares, down from 732,036 hectares in 2015/16. The coffee industry and the Mexican government have taken action to combat coffee rust. With public and private support, the two main producing areas have begun to upgrade their plantations by establishing nurseries with disease-resistant coffee trees, thereby increasing productivity. According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, 136 nurseries were established in Veracruz during 2016/17 and more than 48,000 hectares were replanted with coffee rust resistant trees. In Chiapas, 63 certified nurseries were established and 99 new ones were created in cooperation with other institutions; in addition, more than 27,000 hectares were replanted, for a total increase of 41,000 hectares. Other growing areas are also being rehabilitated and farmers have received technical support and training.

The acreage planted in 2017/18 is expected to remain at the same level as in 2016/17, with the coffee industry and the Mexican government continuing to work to address coffee rust and tree regeneration issues. About 35% of coffee growing areas produce high-quality high-altitude coffee at altitudes of 900 meters and above; another 43% grow at altitudes of 600 to 900 meters.
