Ethiopia-the birthplace of coffee
Ethiopia is famous for its birthplace of coffee. It is said that the country's nomadic mountain tribes first discovered its stimulating effect sometime in the 9th century. The plant was originally eaten raw as berries, rather than in the form of a boiling liquid as it is today.
The commercialization of coffee in Ethiopia began in the 1950s when the government developed a coffee classification and grading system and later established the Ethiopian National Coffee Council (NCBE).
Ethiopia's recent history has witnessed increasing unrest-its citizens have lived under three different types of government over the past 40 years-all of which have led to unrest and discontent and threatened the country's coffee industry.
Despite recent economic, environmental and social problems in the country, local farmers remain committed to growing coffee because it provides a livelihood for many Ethiopian citizens. Fortunately, coffee cooperatives and movements such as the Sidamo Coffee Farmers' Cooperative Union (SCFCU) have been set up to help small-scale farmers.
