In Tanzania, coffee is the second most valuable agricultural export after tobacco. The economy of this country is mainly based on agriculture. Coffee is one of Tanzania's main agricultural exports. Over the past 30 years, it has accounted for 5% of the total export value, generating an average of $100 million a year in export revenue. More than 90 per cent of national output comes from small farmers rather than manors, providing employment opportunities for 400,000 families and directly affecting more than 2.4 million citizens (10 per cent of the population). But coffee has also been one of the long-stagnant industries in the agricultural sector over the past 15 years, with an average annual output of between 800000 and 1 million bags. Grain output continues to decline, quality potential has not been fully developed, resulting in low prices of agricultural products and increased poverty in rural areas. Tanzania has a long tradition of growing coffee. It provides suitable altitude, temperature, rainfall and suitable soil for the high-quality production of Arabica and Robusta. Tanzania produces an average of 30 to 40000 metric tons of coffee per year, of which about 70 per cent is Arabica coffee and 30 per cent is robusta coffee.
