Abateraninkunga Sholi Cooperative

The Abateraninkunga ba Sholi("Sholi") cooperative, meaning "mutual aid", is located in Muhanga discrimint, in the southern province of Rwanda, between Kigali and Lake Kivu. Founded in 2008, Sholi Coffee has been producing coffee for nearly 10 years. The name Sholi Coffee Cooperative is an encouragement to its members to work together to improve the quality of their coffee and the community environment. Shawley was born into a women's group called Kundawa, which means "love" in Kinyarwanda. Fairtrade certification in 2015 and Rainforest Alliance certification in 2016. In 2017 Atlas imported Sholi's goods to the United States for the first time and in 2018 we are excited to bring more of their delicious coffee.

Nearly half (157) of Sholi's 386 members are women, including two of its five board members. In 2016, Sholi received a grant to build community centers and regional health centers to serve members and local residents. During a visit in 2018, we visited the Regional Health Centre and met with several staff members to learn about the valuable services they provide to remote areas. The nearest large health facility is 18 kilometers away, in poor condition, and they can provide blood tests and treatment for malaysia, parasites, respiratory infections and basic first aid. Head Nurse Betty and four other staff members hope to run a nutrition and cooking program to tackle early childhood malnutrition (under 5 years of age) while building some public health partnerships with other clinics in the area.

Sholi has planted more than 400,000 trees and continues to invest in its long-term agriculture, planting 18,000 trees in 2016 and another 30,000 by the end of 2017. Coffee processing in Sholi is similar to other coffee cooperatives in Rwanda, although each has some minor differences. After the coffee cherries are sent to the washing station, the coffee is ground into a slurry, dried and fermented for 18-24 hours, and then rinsed. A4(lowest grade) is dried and sold to local markets. The three higher grades (A1, 2, 3) were soaked for an additional 24 hours before washing. Wet parchment is hand-picked on a covered raised bed and then transferred to a drying bed.

Shuli Coffee has the most intense citrus acidity we've ever seen in the Great Lakes country, complemented by ruby grapefruit and juicy blood orange. Mango, orange and blackberry layers are balanced by honey and lavender. We are excited to bring Sholi coffee to our Rwandan family and hope you enjoy it too!
