Boquete is a valley to the east of Volcan Baru, the tallest city in Panama. The bottom of the valley is about 1000 meters above sea level, and most of the coffee grows on the slopes around the valley, which extend all the way up to the volcano and the Central Cordillera Mountains (north and east of the valley). Coffee is grown above 1650 meters. There are some smaller areas in Poquet, including Quill, Volcano, Palmyra, Hogetta and Jaramillo. Boquete is also known for its incredible biodiversity, especially in flowering plants.

The town of Boquete was settled by immigrants from all over the world in the late 19th century and early 20th century. These immigrants brought many skills; some were engineers who built canals (French and American), and some had experience in shipping and maritime trade. The team gave Boquete a curiosity about how to improve craftsmanship and production that still exists in Boquetenans, infusing the innovative coffee culture that prevails in Panama today.

"strict hard beans" (SHB) refers to coffee that grows above 1350 masl. The higher the altitude, the higher the acidity, the cleaner the cup, and the more consistent the density of coffee beans.
