Arabica coffee, which originated in Ethiopia and some neighboring lands, was originally shipped out of its homeland to neighboring Yemen. Coffee is shipped from Yemen to all parts of the world. What we call typicas coffee today originated from plants that left Yemen and was taken to Java and remote islands, possibly Dutch, possibly transported by the mysterious monk Baba Budan. What we call bourbon coffee today comes from plants shipped by the French from the island of bourbon. These two epic journeys may involve very few coffee plants or seeds.

Typica: this is a tall variety of Arabica coffee that originated from coffee brought to Java from Yemen (probably through India). The most similar plant to what we call Java today was spread from Java in the early 18th century. Its tender leaves are bronze, and its fruits and seeds are very large. Typical plants are known to be less productive and vulnerable to all major diseases and insect pests.

Bourbon: a common variety of Arabica coffee brought by the French from Yemen to Ile Bourbon (an island east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, now known as Reunion). Depending on the specific subgroup, this coffee can be red (Vermelho) or yellow (Amarelo). These plants usually have wider leaves and more rounded fruits and seeds than typical varieties. The stem is stronger and standing more upright than typical. They are sensitive to all major diseases and pests.

Dibica variety

Java Coffee: a typical coffee variety that is suspected to be a descendant of coffee introduced from the island of Java by Yemen. From Java, the plant was first brought to the neighboring island (Timor) and later to East Africa (Cameroon), where it was released for cultivation in 1980. Later, the International Centre for Agricultural Research and Development (CIRAD) introduced the crop in Central America. In Cameroon, this variety has exuberant growth, moderate yield and good resistance to coffee berry disease. Java has elongated fruits and seeds and bronzed young leaves.

Typica mutant was first discovered in Brazil in 1870. It produces large cherries, long, slightly twisted seeds, long internodes and large leaves, and produces relatively low yields.

Kent: a tall typical choice that may be produced or produced from coffee in Kent in India. It has been widely grown in India since the 1930s, and K7 selected from this variety is more common in Kenya. It is called the first choice of antirust coffee.
