Like many other Central American countries, coffee was introduced to Guatemala by European missionaries in the 18th century, and by the mid-19th century, coffee had become an important commodity in the Guatemalan economy. Today, coffee is one of the country's most important exports, accounting for 40% of the country's agricultural export earnings. Although Guatemala ranks only 10th among global coffee producers today, it is one of the most important producers in the minds of professional coffee consumers.
Guatemalans call their country the Land of Eternal Spring. With its crisscross mountains, diverse geographical locations and reliable rainfall, the country has all the necessary conditions for producing high-quality washed Arabica coffee.
Because of its long history as a coffee producer, Guatemala has established a complex support network for its producers. Anacafe (Asociacion Nacional del Cafe) is the National Coffee Association of Guatemala, founded in 1960. Since the early 1990s, Anacafe has defined coffee growing areas in the country according to its unique flavor, climate, soil and altitude.
Guatemalan coffee has a variety of flavors, with strong chocolate, sweet, fruity and complex taste.
