Our "Ekende" project in Uganda is to find a naturally processed East African coffee with a mixture of jam, chocolate and a heavy body. This flavor has become increasingly difficult to find from other sources, but after years of experimentation, we found it in coffee in western Uganda. Descriptions such as "assorted dried fruit", "PB&J", "raisin" and "Goobers" are often thrown away when tasting Ekende samples. The name means "monkey" and admits that the image is a bit naughty and sometimes surprising. Over the past few years, Uganda has made great progress in the quality and consistency of Arabica coffee. These range from displaying micro-batches to finding value and consistency for buyers who are more familiar with mild batch types. "Ekende" provides most of the latter, suggesting that the former provides excellent value, and its economic price is masked by the complexity of East Africa.
