Front Street-Introduction to Robusta Coffee Beans

The two most important coffee trees in coffee making are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica coffee beans originate in the mountains of Yemen and account for about two-thirds of global coffee production. Arabica beans are also grown in the plateau regions of southwest Ethiopia, southeast Sudan, Latin America, India and Indonesia.

Arabica coffee trees grow at high latitudes, so they are also known as "alpine coffee". Arabica beans make coffee with a complex taste, better than Robusta beans, which is why many coffee recipes are keen to claim their coffee beans as "100 percent Arabica beans."

Vietnamese coffee was brought to Vietnam around 1860 by French Jesuit missionaries, and Vietnam established its first coffee plantations in 1888. After the Vietnam War ended in 1975, Vietnam's coffee industry entered a period of rapid development. In 1978, East Germany began to support Vietnam's coffee cultivation industry, and in the 35 years from 1975 to 2010, Vietnam's coffee cultivation area grew from 13,400 hectares to 513,000 hectares, an increase of 37 times.

At present, Vietnam has a total of more than 640,000 hectares of coffee cultivation area, mainly concentrated in the West Yuan area, of which 10%-15% belong to state-owned enterprises and farms, 85%-90% belong to farmers and manor owners. At present, Vietnamese coffee has been exported to 60 countries and regions in the world, and its coffee ranks second only to rice among various agricultural products exported by Vietnam.

Vietnam's geographical location is very conducive to coffee cultivation, southern Vietnam has a hot and humid tropical climate. At the same time, the country's low altitude, flat terrain climate, as well as high density planting, heavy irrigation, excessive fertilization, no shade trees to achieve maximum yield, just can fully utilize the production capacity of Robusta coffee.

Therefore, the most cultivated coffee in Vietnam is Robusta coffee with the best economic benefits.

Because for Vietnam, the economic value of coffee is far more important than its reputation in the fine coffee industry. Many coffee plantations in Daklak, Gia Lai, Kontum and Dong Nai regions in Vietnam have yields of 3 - 4 tons/ha, some even as high as 8 - 9 tons/ha, while Arabica coffee has only a few hundred kilograms/ha.

Knowledge point: Most coffee is grown in the equatorial zone between 25° of the Tropic of Cancer. Coffee growing belt and country of origin have a great influence on its flavor
