Japanese Cafe Lithographic Poster Edward Fournier

"Cafe Japan" is a cabaret in Montmartre-a gathering place for Parisian artists. In 1893, the place was renovated and incorporated the very fashionable Japanese style and lanterns of the time. Edouard Fournier, the owner of the cafe, ordered this poster from Lautrec to attract customers to the club's opening. Singers, dancers and investors appeared in the poster images. In the close-up audience, Lautrec painted two of his best friends: art critic and founder of the literary journal Wagoner Edouard Dujardin on the right, and famous dancer Janet Avril in the middle-her elegant black profile dominating the picture. In the background, another famous actor and singer, Evert Gilbert, is performing on stage. Although her head is cut off abruptly in the frame, her long black gloves and exaggerated posture make her instantly recognizable to the audience at that time.

In the 1890s, with advances in color printing technology and the loosening of laws restricting poster posting, the number of lithographs began to surge. Dances, cafe concerts and street parties enrich the nightlife. Lautrec's advertising posters captured the vibrant appeal of this prosperous "beautiful age."
