Japanese consume a lot of coffee every year, while the number of male patients with esophageal cancer is also high. In order to explore whether coffee can play a role in cancer prevention, Dr. Naguma of Tohoku University in Japan and his colleagues analyzed the data provided by the Japanese Journal of Psychosomatic Research on the diet of respondents such as drinking coffee. The data showed that of the 38000 people aged 40 to 64 who had no history of cancer, 157 developed oral, throat and esophageal cancer over the next 13 years. Those who drank one or more cups of coffee a day had a half lower risk of developing these cancers than those who did not drink coffee.

Dr. Naguma Heng said that the anti-cancer effect of coffee, especially for people at high risk of cancer, such as smokers and alcohol drinkers, was unexpected, which is essentially different from their previous belief that coffee causes cancer. He believes that although quitting smoking and drinking is the best-selling view to prevent these cancers, the anti-cancer effect of coffee is equally effective for both low-risk and high-risk groups, so it can not be ignored.
