Buying a cup of freshly brewed coffee during office hours is a necessary means for office workers to refresh their minds, but do you know how much caffeine is in the coffee they drink? At the end of May, the Consumer Protection Department of the Executive Yuan, together with the Food and Drug Administration, sampled 80 freshly brewed coffees from 20 stores in 10 companies. The results showed that American coffee had much higher caffeine than latte coffee. The famous Eco coffee, a large American coffee with 300 c.c., contained 310 mg.

EU: Daily intake should not exceed 300 mg

According to the assessment of the European Union's Food Science Expert Committee, caffeine intake is recommended to be below 300 mg per day, which will not affect health, but excessive intake may lead to osteoporosis, palpitations, insomnia and other risks. As for patients with cardiovascular diseases, arrhythmia, gastrointestinal diseases, long-term insomnia, pregnant women and children, they should avoid drinking.

Caffeine red, yellow and green labels help consumers judge for themselves

In view of the European Union recommendation that caffeine intake should not exceed 300 mg per day, it calls on coffee brewers to follow the red, yellow and green labeling measures for caffeine content (red indicates caffeine content of more than 201mg; yellow indicates caffeine content of 101 - 200mg; green indicates caffeine content of less than 100mg), in order to provide consumers with a simple way to judge.

The FDA also recommends that consumers drink coffee drinks no more than one cup a day on the red label or three cups a day on the green label. People can measure their coffee consumption and health through information on product labels.
