Drinking coffee does not increase the risk of heart disease or cancer, but helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a large German study.

The findings of the nearly decade-long German study contradict those of previous studies on coffee drinking, which have shown that drinking coffee increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and other diseases. The German team found that drinking coffee did not increase the risk of major chronic diseases in healthy adults.

According to the team's report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers led by Flegel, an epidemiologist at the German Institute for Human Nutrition, at the beginning of the study, data on coffee drinking, diet, exercise habits and health were collected from 40, 2000 German adults who did not suffer from any chronic disease.

For the next nine years, the team followed them every two or three years to see if they had any health problems, especially cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

They found that regular coffee drinkers had the same risk of developing these diseases as people who did not drink coffee.

At the same time, the researchers also found that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than non-coffee drinkers.

After taking into account possible diabetes factors such as weight and smoking, the researchers concluded that coffee drinkers had a 23% lower risk of developing diabetes than other people.
