In the 1948 general election, the Social Democratic leader J. M. H. Figueres Ferrer waged a civil war, seized power, established a governing council (see Costa Rican Civil War), and outlawed the Popular Vanguard Party.
In 1949 Figueres Ferrer handed over power to the elected leader of the National League, O. Urat Blanco.
In October 1951, Figueres Ferrer founded the National Liberation Party.
Of the six general elections held between 1953 and 1978, the National Liberation Party won four. In 1978, R. Carazo Odio, leader of the Solidarity Party, was elected president. In order to ease domestic contradictions, he adopted measures such as austerity spending and increased social welfare, while proposing to restrict state capital and encourage foreign and private investment.
In February 1982, L.A. Monge Alvarez, leader of the National Liberation Party, was elected president.
In February 2010, Chinchilla won the election and became the first female president in Costa Rica's history.
Tarasu, located south of the country's capital, San Jose, is one of the most prized coffee growing areas in the country. La Minita Tarrazu is a local specialty, but only in limited quantities, grown on land called La Minita, owned by the last three generations of the McAlpine family in England. Other notable coffees include Juan Vinas (PR), H.Tournon, Windmill (SHB), Montebello and Santa Rosa. Fine coffee is generally grown in Heredia and Central Canyon. Another coffee is Sarchi (one of five towns that represent Costa Rica's "coffee route"), which grows on the slopes of Poas Volcano, 53 kilometers from San Jose. Saatchi was founded in 1949 on 30770 hectares of sugarcane and coffee-growing land. Although it started late in developing fine coffee, Costa Rica's fine coffee has developed rapidly, with mild fruit acids treated with honey, soft taste and sweet and fine berry flavor.
