Excessive consumption of coffee is not healthy, but moderate consumption can not only refresh, but also have a variety of health benefits. Drinking two cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of death from cirrhosis by 66 percent, according to a new study published in the journal Hepatology, the journal of the American Society for the Study of Liver Diseases.

The Singapore Chinese Health Study tracked the lifestyle and disease status of 63,000 participants aged 45 to 74 over a 15-year period. During the study period, 114 participants died due to cirrhosis. The results showed that daily coffee consumption was associated with a 66 percent lower risk of death from cirrhosis (especially non-viral hepatitis related cirrhosis, such as fatty liver) than non-coffee drinkers; participants who consumed at least 20 grams of ethanol (alcohol) daily had the greatest risk of cirrhosis. However, coffee drinking did not reduce the risk of death from cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B virus. In addition, other beverages such as black tea, green tea, juice and soda had no effect on liver disease mortality.

Earlier studies have shown that coffee has amazing liver protection effects. Coffee drinkers had lower ALT levels than non-coffee drinkers, according to Sanji Fuchopra, an American liver disease expert and professor at Harvard Medical School.
