Ecuador 2016 Taza Dorada Robusta Champion
In July last year, Ecuador held the first national boutique Robusta raw bean competition Taza Dorada Robusta, and Miguel Meza, the founder of Paradise Bakery, was invited to serve as the judge.
All the winning coffee finalists come from Sucumbios province, near the Colombian border. The winner Javier Calixto Rivera's coffee farm is 2600 feet above sea level, almost twice the height of all the other contestants' farms. His Robusta flavors include grapes, caramel, jasmine, kiwi and bananas. Among them, bananas are the best Robusta flavor, which is rare even in Arabica.
Over the past 20 years, Anecafe and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) have held Taza Dorada Arabica competitions (similar to Cup of Excellence) to promote Ecuadorian Arabica varieties. This year, they held the Ecuadorian Robusta contest for the first time, hoping to open up the market for boutique Robusta and let people know that Rob also has a great flavor. Baked beans in Paradise paid 2.5 times the normal market price to buy this champion bean.
Because of climate change and coffee pests, many coffee farmers in Ecuador can no longer grow Arabica, boutique Rob will be a potential choice in the future!
